Snow Puffs

zesty_pintoOkay, still tired, but found that the fashion district loves Chinese bakeries for some reason. I can’t complain, I got those chive buns and some pork buns and life is good for a buck a pop.
Tonight’s a meeting, but maybe I can score some time to catch a moonshot test with the new teleconverter.

Fanboys is… well before I give an opinion, I should detail what it’s about.
The main character is one of five friends who were hardcore Star Wars fans since they were kids and never really grew up, save the protagonist who attempts to enter real life by following the footsteps of his father, who runs a successful chain of car dealerships.
When the main character realizes that his best friend of the bunch has cancer and not much longer to live, he decides to follow in their lifelong dream of breaking into Lucas’ headquarters, Skywalker Ranch, and see for themselves the first screening of the Phantom Menace. What ensues is a very, very, nerdy road trip movie where they overcome their inhibitions and blahblahblahblah.
Now, I might have missed a lot since I am by no means a true Star Wars fan. I have friends who love the movies to the point where they can replicate 80% of the film’s dialogue. This movie was designed to appeal to that crowd. I know this because the crowd kept laughing to scenes that I did not really get. So with that said, I did not find it that great. One that made me particularly irksome was the obsession the film makes between remarking on the war between Trekkies (Trekkers?) and Star Wars fans.
Some highlights I would note were that despite the nature of the film, the cinematography tried to be a little vibrant between the typical fare. Most of it was very mundane, but there were a few shots that told they put some effort into this film, which is acceptable for a movie that sells itself more as a comedy to begin with.
I’m sure you have heard of the many cameos in this film and I’m sure there are tons of them that I missed. Aside from a few of the more staple characters like Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams being in this film, others included the fanboy director himself, Kevin Smith, coupled with quite a few other staple characters you have seen in previous Apatow-endorsed films, including a tattooed pimp Seth Rogen, a Skywalker Ranch security head Fred McBride, and even the founder of AintItCool News as himself. I know I am missing a lot of other actors as well, there’s that many (even as I type this I forgot to mention William Shatner). Strangely enough, I thought Martin Starr was in it too since one of the buddies acts like an overgrown version of his Freaks and Geeks counterpart.
I have no real way to see this movie as anything other than a really nerdy cliché film, from the pathetic fights between Trek v. Wars (did I mention that the previews included a trailer for the new Star Trek?), to the weird references made with Star Wars in this film, and the continuous fact that this film tries to rib at how pathetic Star Wars nerds are.

I didn’t mention this before about Push, but the most intriguing thing about the film was that in the credits you could see that the Research for the film was done by Gordon Freeman. Half-Life isn’t a game, it’s a documentary!

Date: 2009-02-12 08:40 pm (UTC)I'm familiar with Trekkies, but I never saw it. I have a difficult time enjoying documentary movies, and the subject of fanboys really doesn't appeal me. If it did, then I would have loved that convention a lot more.

Date: 2009-02-11 09:40 pm (UTC)-AMC Loews Times Square, which seems to always have a new thing weekly that's kind of rare, which is fine by me since they also have IMAX.
-Village Cinema (or is it Cinema Village?) in the East Village
-Lincoln Center theater, not the one with IMAX, there's another one that's built into the basement of what was probably a subway entrance. They have salmon sandwiches!
I've been to many other places once or twice. Angelika, Landmark Sunshine, that one not far from Jefferson Market, the one on the West end of 34th, etc., etc.
