couldn't you just spray paint the shoulder pads black and call it a day? that seems like an awful lot of work for a halloween costume.

Nah, it would be cumbersome. My big deal was trying to get something that would overlap with a coat without it involving something that will completely impede my freedom. To be honest, I wanted to jury rig the setup with some pack straps and the like instead of belts.
