-but the idea of him donating even a small amount like $10,000 (okay, small with respect to him) to fund the Jena 6 trial is quite heartening.

It looks like the donation isn't even necessary, though, thank god. One can only wonder what other beasts hide underneath the surface of this society, though, let alone all our societies. Many black comedians, after all, who profit from the humor of poking of their ethnicity, do seem to have popularity around all audiences for a reason, and it's not exactly family-oriented.

Also, another point towards what I find distasteful about politics: DA Reed Walters is a Democrat.

I've got some seriously mixed feelings about the Jena 6 business, and just had a long debate with the Dear Doctor and his roommate about it last night.

I know most people think that DAs have unlimited power to prosecute or not, but they're still confined by what the laws of their home state are. And from my cursory review of the facts, I'm inclined to think that Walters acted appropriately (given the state of the law in Louisiana).

I did read some remarks about that, that he was doing only what he felt was in the right regard of the people who voted for him, but it amazes me that he himself would personally come for something as minute as a sitting protest, especially when people considered those nooses to be a "silly prank."

I'm sure there are other factors going on as well, but the idea of him threatening them in person over a nonviolent protest of so few people only helped tip the boiling kettle in my opinion.
