I got them Tuesdays
Oct. 30th, 2018 11:16 amEver spend a day just writing up a post here and there and then forgetting to paste it into the blog posting and just having it up and go like *that*?
Yeah, that's what happened. If I didn't write like I was chronicling the history of the Punic War, I'd probably not be as annoyed about this. Oh, the wailing and gnashing of teeth!
...anyway,
Cooking
I made the ice cream mixes to be frozen, which will be frozen today: the prototype ice cream may not have had enough coal in it or was integrated the wrong way. Start with the yolks and you get a rich, waxy black. Add cuttlefish ink, and the color becomes even deeper, to the point where it's an edible paint if you don't mind the potential salmonella and reeking of fish. Either way, the powdered cocoa was added and the color was retained (it still reeked of fish though).
Mix it with milk that has been steeped with cocoa nibs for an hour or so (I could have probably kept it in there for longer but wanted to get this done) and it turns into a rich custard.
But to reduce the fish smell further, I took a pound of dark chips and melted it into the warmed mixture. The smell of fish is no more, mingled with the strong smell of expensive chocolate (itself a melange of flavors). That's the neat thing about chocolate: it's so strong that it's easy to overpower flavors you don't want. It's a lot more pudding-like as a result, so I added more milk which threatened the color a bit, but I think is fine.
I wanted an orange tone as well, so my next recipe was pumpkin. Why? Because fall is about the pumpkins (though I was tempted to do a blood orange ice cream). The neat thing about this one is that it used a different style that I wanted to give a shot because of how much I'd prefer to avoid having so many egg whites.
Scald the milk again and add more sugar ( brown and syrup) along with a can of pumpkin, pumpkin flavoring, and vanilla; make a glorp of xantham gum and starch with a portion of milk and then add it to the mix and boil it out; take a portion of them mix and use cream cheese to integrate before returning it to the mix to smooth out the flavor overall.
Even without the cheese it was alredy pretty thick. I had to add more milk again. Michelle said it definitely tastes like pumpkin so mission accomplished!
I was also given some ideas on how to make breakfast sandwiches. There's english muffins here that are BOG2, so I had to give it a shot. The alternative is waffles, but I've got enough egg whites to make A LOT of waffles.
Garden
Despite that, I need to get the garden cleared while the weather isn't awful. I'm hoping today's going to be one of those days because the week's relatively miserable in general. I told myself I'd do it once it stops being freezing.
Laundry
-also needs to be done. I may not have enough time to accomplish everything, but I'd like to give it a shot. I have Thursday off too, so I might try to parse things out along the way. I think if I wait until Thursday to do the load, it won't be the end of the world. I do worry about the egg whites getting old though, so...
Nonsequitor
Steam reinstalled properly works fine. I need to reinstall everything though.
Another Nonsequitor
A friend of mine had their credit card ID stolen. It was used to pay for counseling.
This is 2018 in a nutshell: regular folks getting robbed so someone can get therapy.
I should honestly do more than archive all this garbage on Facebook. At this point, I'm tempted to dump NaNo for it.

Date: 2018-10-30 04:01 pm (UTC)One podcast I listened to had a segment called "It's a metaphor". I nominate your friend's story for that segment.

Date: 2018-10-30 04:42 pm (UTC)I think it's some froo froo health fad item, but for Halloween, I'll take exception at this since I wanted something really black. On the bright side, activated charcoal is a proper detox item and it lasts forever, so I guess it'll be one for the first aid kit. The squid ink I'll probably try to make into pasta in the coming months once I get over what a mess this whole endeavor makes.
Is the podcast the one on screenwriting? Only asking because I'm lazy googline and was curious if it was something that the victim might be interested in throwing in a word about.

Date: 2018-10-30 04:48 pm (UTC)It was a left wing podcast about politics and feminism. It also had a weekly segment called "men displeased". It was great, but the people who make it have moved on.

Date: 2018-10-30 05:12 pm (UTC)Hell, I'm listening to The Daily Zeitgeist right now, ha!
My big concern atm is finding orange food coloring, by the way. The pumpkin like a creamy faint orange, and I'm wondering if I should find a way to give it an artificial look to reflect the deep, dark, black ice cream it's paired against.

Date: 2018-10-30 05:27 pm (UTC)I advocate that you SHOULD get orange food colouring, but I can't suggest how to do it.
My favourite person in the podcast went on to a different feminist political podcast (Hysteria) so I'm not hard done by.
