Anyway, I'm going to hit the Tribeca Film Fest. My parents have American Express, so I'm going to see about borrowing their card to order me some tickets to see Moon since all the tickets sold out(!) within a day for Black Dynamite. If anyone wants to tag along, speak today or forever hold your peace since I am going to be buying what few tix I can hope to get!

Where: NYC's Financial District
When: April 30 @ 6pm
How: Any goddamn way possible!

I'll try for the rush ticks too so I can get a stab at Black Dynamite. If you like cheesy blacsploitation, you'll love this film.

Unfortunately, there's no listed limited release so far, but it's got such a grindhouse charm that I can see them distroing this to more theaters after the festivals are said and done. Unfortunately, that might not be for another year or so if this ends up like some of the other limited stuff I've seen, like Kabluey and The Fall. It might be worth it though, as this movie looks like it will push the blacksploitation theme hard (notice how I did not add an entendre pun here).

Cinema
Observe and Report and Pass

Ronnie (Seth Rogen) is one of those guys who grew up as a special needs kid. He's not only racist, delusional, and overall up-on-himself to the point where he lives off of medications daily, that he does not have much going for him beyond the fact that he is the head of mall security. But he is hoping for his big break, and when a flasher breaks into the mall and mentally assaults the women there, Ronnie finds his potentially big break.

If this sounds like a loser comedy then you are correct in a majority of it. Ronnie is indeed a loser, but the comedy in this film is very subdued in terms of comedy. Granted, the casting of Seth Rogen is ideal since Seth is good at making the subtle funny. Unfortunately, a majority of the cast does not come off as very funny through this film since the deliveries end up coming out too flat or too overblown, which adds to a sense of confusion throughout the entire film.

In all honesty, this reminds me a lot of last year's film, "The Foot Fist Way" which was about a tae kwon doe master looking for greater things and finding his beloved mentor screwing his wife. The major difference between the two is that the latter was intentionally cut to look as low budget as possible. Observe and Report gives no misgivings about its appearance and tries to make it look presentable, and while it's good that they're not appealing to this sort of gimmick, they both came off fairly flat.

Both movies do have some redeemable qualities too though, as there are action scenes with Seth that come off as so over-the-top that they are hilarious by their own right. Danny McBride and Seth have some of that charm about them, but in a film like this they would practically be interchangable.
