Man...

Went to the basement, where I was toying around with piecing together old computer parts into a decent computer. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to replace motherboards that don't really tell you any specs for a power source (there's a 533MHz board that was trashed, and for good reason; the damn thing wouldn't work with any power source. Knowing my luck, it was probably because I tried to install a box one volt too strong).

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

This redundant little idiom, friends, tells you what you can find when you look into trashed computer parts. I spent most of my time testing trashed hard drives, all 12 of them (I only got through 7 of them for the time, though). Out of the ones I tested, 3 were defective. One of the 3 made sounds like it was a motorboat, so I spent my time checking its BIOS whilst pretending I was playing that Atari waterbike game.

Out of the 4, two of them still had some feasible data left.

First one belonged to someone that used eBay, sports game fan since their hard drive still contained jpgs of Madden 2002 (either a sign that they played the game or sold it on eBay). Cookies in the background told that the person was into eBay... and porn sites. Did some hunting around with a find command and found a number of... items of questionable origin. I looked through a few until I remembered that I was doing this in the company of minors, so immediately stopped whilst giggling like a child at what some guy looks at in his privacy.

Second one belonged to what I *think* was a woman. Anime and music video fangirl, had a number of her own webcam photos on it as well as a huge collection of anime and music videos (apparently the person had a thing for System of a Down and Cyprus(sp?) Hill, but I can't blame them for the former; that guy has SUCH a voice!). 60 gig hard drive and all including a copy of the Transporter and Van Wilder; I had to confiscate that one, first because it was 60 gigs (larger than my 40 gig model), secondly because it had the Transporter (I still wanted to see that movie just for the scene with the door), and finally because I really need the room! It had some bad sectors in it, so I figure I'll just transfer what I want to my current drive, format the puppy, and then take advantage of all that room by putting most of my mp3s into there. Now I just need to find a decent motherboard and case from the salvage...
