Awwwww happy birthday to her! It's so great you managed to spoil her a bit - it's so meaningful to get spoiled when you're usually living on a tight budget.
I'm not sure that your friend's relationship is long for this world, if they're regularly fighting so much they can't go out together for planned events.
And agreed that kids change the social dynamics for the worse. I'm happy that most of my friends are childless at this point. I respect that Social Security is basically a Ponzi scheme and if people don't keep having babies I won't get a pension, but do they really need to do it so near to me?
